Why Your Elderly Parents Cough More in Winter Than Summer

If your parents cough more during winter, don't ignore it as 'just old age.' Winter air can be harder on the lungs, especially for senior citizens. Cold air dries the throat and airways, making them more sensitive. At the same time, pollution often increases in winter because cold, still air traps dust, smoke, and harmful particles close to the ground.

Recent winter air-quality studies in India showed rising PM2.5 levels across major cities, and Delhi recorded an average winter PM2.5 level of 159 µg/m³ in 2024–25. These tiny particles can enter deep into the lungs and trigger coughing, breathlessness, wheezing, or irritation.

Elderly are more affected because their lungs and immunity are weaker. Keeping indoor air clean, reducing dust, improving ventilation, and using an air purifier can help them breathe more comfortably through winter.
